Smell holds memory in its fist.

The aroma of coffee in a Brewster kitchen
persists forty years after the last cup was poured
and the percolator parts scrubbed clean
and the grandparent owners dead and buried.

Every first puff of a cigarette belongs
to Wade in his easy chair
watching Watergate hearings
and the channel 7 afternoon movie.

But they all stand in line behind
Sea & Ski on grass mats
at John's Pond
at an age I could count on the fingers of one hand.
